We recently acquired this photograph of
Elizabeth "Betty" Meyers in Bullwinkle's Cafe, Rochester, NY (no date on print).
Betty owned Bullwinkle's for many decades until its closure in about 2010. This sing-along piano bar was where Dreamland Faces first performed together. The place was full of costume hats, instruments, and truly fascinating regular patrons. It also featured a working Nickelodeon and 45 rpm jukebox.

Played at the University of WI (Madison) this past weekend to a set of early animated films restored by the George Eastman House. Felix the Cat & Koko the Clown are always entertaining to accompany.
Another highlight of the weekend for us was getting to see the film 3 Women on screen.

It is said that Brecht wrote Hollywood Elegy No.7 about his beautiful friend Peter Lorre,
who suffered from morphine addiction. The original German text is lost.
Below is our version as recorded with J. Sweet (piano), Karen (accordion), and saw & vocal (Andy).

We are currently working with pianist Julie Sweet to develop a recording of Hanns Eisler pieces from the Hollywood songbook. We plan to perform these and modern works by Poulenc & others with Sweet during 2012.

Andy & Karen played at Bedlam's New Year's Eve party in the Ivy Building this year. Karen played the Lesmann electronic accordion/organ. Nice, loud bass on the accorgan, but it weighs about 30 pounds. Phil Vandervaart , notorious local sign painter - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxlIpB6zD24 - seems to have been at the party too, he happens to be our excellent landlord. |
